Mid-Northumberland District Scouts

Felton Scout Group

The Beaver Colony meets together each week with the aim of having fun and making friends ... and they learn a lot along the way! The Beaver programme is full of activities that allow them to start learning about themselves, get to know other people, and explore and care about the world they live in and other people. When they are 8 they move on into Cub Scouts. Felton Beavers are always very busy! Early in 2008 bird boxes were developed and we were delighted to house and view a number of tits. Other subjects covered have included plant growing, decorating biscuits, rounders, a police visit, swimming, Felton Fair beanbag game and organising a very special family camp in July when we allowed Cubs and Scouts to join in! The highlight of our autumn term was a visit to the Warkworth panto, A Christmas Carol, where we sat at the front and just about became part of the cast! This term we have been celebrating the Chinese New Year and going beach combing as well as doing many other exciting things.

Cub Scouts are aged between 8 and 10½. They meet together in Packs and take part in all sorts of activities. As a Cub Scout you will: have a lot of fun, try lots of new things, make new friends, and explore your local area and beyond. In May 2007, many Cubs camped at Beanley with our Scouts at the Northumberland Centenary Camp celebrating 100 years of Scouting.   There were lots of interesting activities to take part in as well as for some Cubs the exciting experience of camping for the first time. Some of our older Cubs also went to London for a week on a District Cub trip with Cubs from Alnwick and Rothbury, again to celebrate the Centenary of Scouting, and they attended the World Jamboree for a day.

In May 2008 we again camped out, this time at Gosforth Park to celebrate Northumberland's 100 years. Then in July we had our own family camp as mentioned above. In the autumn we attended the Village Remembrance Parade along with the beavers and scouts. We also attended the District Carol service which was held in Felton Church .

Scouts are aged 10-14 and sometimes join after being in the Cub section or directly into the Scout Troop. Either way you will be made more than welcome. Whatever your interests, Scouts has something to offer you with many badges covering a wide range of interests and activities from hiking, camping, sports to entertaining, information technology and conservation. The Scout section is all about having fun and giving you opportunities to do things you may never have had the chance to do before. Felton Scouts have attended all the camps mentioned above. We have also been on a survival hike using army style rations and sleeping out in 'bivvy' bags near Uswayford in the Cheviots. We also did survival training at a weekend camp at Mounthooly A water activities weekend at Hawkhirst on Kielder Water was great fun. Everyone got very wet! We have had lots of outdoor meetings, hikes and camps over the summer and autumn. This term's meetings were mainly indoors where some basic skills were practiced. We had one camp in early March when we hiked from west of Longhorsley to our camp site at the Dean. After an afternoon of knife and axe training and abseiling we then bivvied out overnight — a very wet night!

Beavers, Cubs and Scouts are moving to enable all sections to meet on the same night at the same venue.

*            This will give us more space for activities, vital as numbers increase.

*            It will enable leaders to help with other sections.

*            Flag ceremonies will involve the closing of one section and the opening of the next.

*            Brownies will also be meeting on the same evening in the Coquet Room therefore links with them will be possible.

*            District explorers also meet on Wednesday so joint meetings between scouts and explorers may possibly take place.
